Species migration profile
Bluefish migration calendar.
- Pomatomus saltatrix
- Migratory
- Also: Blues, Snappers (juveniles), Choppers
Blues follow bait with no subtlety. Look for diving birds, busting fish, and frantic baitfish on the surface. They'll hit poppers, metals, plugs, and live or chunk bait — cut up to wire leader to handle their teeth. Larger 'gator' blues tend to school separately from snapper-size fish.
Conservation & regulation
Overfished — coastwide stock under rebuilding plan per ASMFC. Recreational bag limits reduced in recent years.

Temperature triggers
- Preferred: 60–72°F
- Avoid below: 50°F
- Avoid above: 80°F
Read the water temperature, not the calendar — fish move when the water hits these thresholds, not when the date does.
Primary baitfish
- Menhaden
- Mullet
- Anchovies
- Bay anchovies
Predators follow prey. Track the bait — find the bait, find the bluefish.
Regulation & sources
Coastwide management by ASMFC. Bag limits typically 3 per angler with no minimum size, but state rules vary — verify current limits before keeping fish.
