Species migration profile
Sheepshead migration calendar.
- Archosargus probatocephalus
- Seasonal Movement
- Also: Convict fish, Sheepie
The signature sheepshead pattern is fishing live fiddler crabs, peeled shrimp, or barnacles tight to structure — pilings, jetties, oyster bars, bridge fenders. The bite is famously light. Late winter through early spring concentrates fish at passes and inlets for spawning.
Conservation & regulation
Stable in most ranges. Not subject to federal management — state-managed across the coast.

Temperature triggers
- Preferred: 60–78°F
- Avoid below: 52°F
- Avoid above: 84°F
Read the water temperature, not the calendar — fish move when the water hits these thresholds, not when the date does.
Primary baitfish
- Fiddler crabs
- Barnacles
- Shrimp
- Oysters
Predators follow prey. Track the bait — find the bait, find the sheepshead.
Regulation & sources
State-specific bag and size limits. Florida, Texas, and other coastal states all have minimum size requirements typically in the 12–14 inch range.
