California fishing regulations.
- Saltwater coast
- 7 popular species
California has the most diverse fishing in the Lower 48 — golden trout above 11,000 feet, Pacific salmon in rain-fed coastal rivers, and trophy bass in delta sloughs. Regulations are correspondingly complex and worth reading per water.
Fishing regulations change every season. This page is a summary maintained by Bield — bag limits, exact dates, and species-specific rules must be verified with CDFW before each trip.
License requirements
Anglers age 16 and older generally need a valid fishing license to fish in California. Resident and non-resident licenses are sold online through the CDFW and at most sporting goods retailers. Annual, multi-day, and lifetime licenses are typically available. Senior, military, and youth discounts apply in most cases. California requires separate validations / report cards for steelhead and abalone (where seasons remain open). License costs and exact age thresholds change — verify with the CDFW before purchase.
Freshwater seasons and limits
Sierra trout fishing dominates the eastern half of the state — rainbow, brown, brook, and golden trout in alpine lakes and streams. Largemouth bass, striped bass, and Delta smelt-related closures shape the Central Valley and Delta. Most trout streams are open only April through November with statewide season dates.
River and stream regulations
The trout stream regulation map is complex — some streams are open year-round, some have artificial-only restrictions, some are closed seasonally. The Owens, McCloud, Fall, and Truckee rivers are flagship trout waters. Steelhead-specific report cards apply on coastal rivers.
Saltwater seasons and limits
Pacific salmon (chinook, coho), rockfish, halibut, lingcod, and tuna define the saltwater fishery. Salmon seasons change yearly — sometimes mid-season — based on stock assessment. Rockfish has depth-zone restrictions. Marine Protected Areas have no-take rules.
Special regulations
The trout regulation booklet is one of the most complex in the country — read the specific stream regulation, not the statewide rule. Steelhead report cards must be submitted annually. Marine Protected Area maps are essential for ocean fishing.
