Idaho fishing regulations.

Idaho is the trout fly-fishing core of the Northern Rockies — Henry's Fork, South Fork Snake, and the Salmon River drainage define the state's identity, with steelhead runs adding fall/winter destination fishing.

Verify with the agency before fishing

Fishing regulations change every season. This page is a summary maintained by Bield — bag limits, exact dates, and species-specific rules must be verified with IDFG before each trip.

License requirements

Anglers age 16 and older generally need a valid fishing license to fish in Idaho. Resident and non-resident licenses are sold online through the IDFG and at most sporting goods retailers. Annual, multi-day, and lifetime licenses are typically available. Senior, military, and youth discounts apply in most cases. Salmon and steelhead require separate permits / tags in addition to the fishing license. License costs and exact age thresholds change — verify with the IDFG before purchase.

Freshwater seasons and limits

Trout dominate — rainbow, brown, brook, cutthroat, lake, and bull trout (catch-and-release only) across Idaho's mountain streams and reservoirs. Bass, crappie, walleye, and sturgeon (catch-and-release only) live in the Snake River system. Most waters have year-round seasons with regional bag limit variations.

River and stream regulations

Idaho's flagship rivers include the Henry's Fork, South Fork Snake, Big Wood, Big Lost, St. Joe, Salmon, Selway, and Lochsa. Steelhead season runs the Salmon and Clearwater rivers in fall and spring. Catch-and-release-only stretches protect trophy populations on premier waters.

Special regulations

Bull trout are catch-and-release only statewide. White sturgeon are catch-and-release only statewide. Salmon and steelhead require permits and seasons close in-season when quotas are reached. Henry's Fork and South Fork Snake have catch-and-release sections.
