Indiana fishing regulations.

- 7 popular species
Indiana balances inland reservoir fishing, Lake Michigan trout and salmon, and Ohio River sauger and walleye for one of the more varied Midwestern fisheries.
Fishing regulations change every season. This page is a summary maintained by Bield — bag limits, exact dates, and species-specific rules must be verified with IDNR before each trip.
License requirements
Anglers age 16 and older generally need a valid fishing license to fish in Indiana. Resident and non-resident licenses are sold online through the IDNR and at most sporting goods retailers. Annual, multi-day, and lifetime licenses are typically available. Senior, military, and youth discounts apply in most cases. Trout/salmon stamp is required to harvest trout and salmon. License costs and exact age thresholds change — verify with the IDNR before purchase.
Freshwater seasons and limits
Bass, walleye, crappie, bluegill, and channel catfish drive most inland fishing. Lake Michigan delivers chinook and coho salmon, lake trout, brown trout, and steelhead. The Ohio River runs the southern border with sauger, walleye, hybrid striped bass, and catfish. Year-round seasons on most species.
River and stream regulations
Smallmouth bass fishing on streams like Sugar Creek, the Tippecanoe, and Mississinewa rivers. Trout stocking on designated streams. Steelhead runs in Trail Creek and the Little Calumet enter Lake Michigan tributaries in fall and spring.
Special regulations
Trout/salmon stamp required for Lake Michigan and inland trout/salmon. Lake Michigan tributaries have specific steelhead and salmon regulations including season dates and gear rules.
