Kentucky fishing leans on big reservoirs and the Cumberland tailwater — Dale Hollow's smallmouth fishery is iconic, and the upper Cumberland holds wild browns to 20+ pounds.
Fishing regulations change every season. This page is a summary maintained by Bield — bag limits, exact dates, and species-specific rules must be verified with KDFWR before each trip.
License requirements
Anglers age 16 and older generally need a valid fishing license to fish in Kentucky. Resident and non-resident licenses are sold online through the KDFWR and at most sporting goods retailers. Annual, multi-day, and lifetime licenses are typically available. Senior, military, and youth discounts apply in most cases. A trout permit is required to harvest trout. License costs and exact age thresholds change — verify with the KDFWR before purchase.
Freshwater seasons and limits
Black bass (largemouth, smallmouth, spotted), striped bass, walleye, crappie, and catfish drive most fishing on Lake Cumberland, Kentucky Lake, Lake Barkley, and Dale Hollow. Trophy smallmouth waters on Dale Hollow are nationally recognized. Year-round seasons on most species.
River and stream regulations
The Cumberland River below Wolf Creek Dam is one of the better tailwater trout fisheries in the South — wild brown trout and stocked rainbows. Smallmouth fishing on the Green, Kentucky, and Licking rivers. Hatchery-supported trout streams in the eastern coal counties.
Special regulations
Cumberland River below Wolf Creek Dam has trophy regulations on certain stretches. Trout permit required to harvest. Dale Hollow Lake has special smallmouth bass slot/length limits given its trophy status.
