Louisiana is the redfish and speckled trout capital of the country — coastal marsh fishing rivals anywhere on Earth, and inland the Atchafalaya basin holds trophy largemouth bass and crappie.
Fishing regulations change every season. This page is a summary maintained by Bield — bag limits, exact dates, and species-specific rules must be verified with LDWF before each trip.
License requirements
Anglers age 16 and older generally need a valid fishing license to fish in Louisiana. Resident and non-resident licenses are sold online through the LDWF and at most sporting goods retailers. Annual, multi-day, and lifetime licenses are typically available. Senior, military, and youth discounts apply in most cases. License costs and exact age thresholds change — verify with the LDWF before purchase.
Freshwater seasons and limits
Largemouth bass, crappie (sac-a-lait), bream, and catfish drive freshwater fishing across the Atchafalaya, Toledo Bend, Caddo Lake, and the bayou and swamp systems. Year-round seasons with statewide bag limits.
River and stream regulations
River fishing centers on the Atchafalaya basin, the Mississippi, the Ouachita, and the Red — bass, catfish, and bream throughout. Few coldwater rivers; no significant trout fishery.
Saltwater seasons and limits
Speckled trout (spotted seatrout), redfish (red drum), flounder, tripletail, and tarpon define the inshore fishery — Louisiana coastal marsh is one of the most productive saltwater fisheries in North America. Offshore for snapper, grouper, tuna, and cobia. Federal limits also apply offshore.
Special regulations
Speckled trout and redfish bag/size limits have changed in recent years to address declining stocks — verify current rules before each trip. Saltwater species-specific size and bag limits per region.
