Michigan has more freshwater coast than any other state — Great Lakes salmon and steelhead, blue-ribbon trout streams in the Lower Peninsula, and walleye fishing across Saginaw Bay and Lake Erie.

Verify with the agency before fishing

Fishing regulations change every season. This page is a summary maintained by Bield — bag limits, exact dates, and species-specific rules must be verified with MI DNR before each trip.

License requirements

Anglers age 16 and older generally need a valid fishing license to fish in Michigan. Resident and non-resident licenses are sold online through the MI DNR and at most sporting goods retailers. Annual, multi-day, and lifetime licenses are typically available. Senior, military, and youth discounts apply in most cases. Michigan does not require a separate trout stamp; a base license covers all species. License costs and exact age thresholds change — verify with the MI DNR before purchase.

Freshwater seasons and limits

Walleye, smallmouth bass, largemouth bass, lake trout, brown trout, brook trout, and panfish across thousands of inland lakes plus the Great Lakes. Walleye fishing on Saginaw Bay, Lake Erie, and Lake St. Clair is exceptional.

River and stream regulations

Michigan's blue-ribbon trout rivers — the Au Sable, Manistee, Pere Marquette, Boardman — are nationally famous. Steelhead runs in fall and spring up tributaries to Lake Michigan and Lake Huron. The Pere Marquette has a quality fishing flies-only stretch.

Special regulations

Great Lakes salmon (chinook, coho), steelhead, and lake trout are highlights. Designated 'flies only' stretches on the Au Sable, Pere Marquette, and Manistee. Some rivers have specific gear and harvest restrictions to protect wild populations.
