New Jersey is more fishable than its reputation suggests — the South Branch Raritan and Musconetcong are real trout rivers, and Atlantic striped bass migrate through the entire coast every spring and fall.

Verify with the agency before fishing

Fishing regulations change every season. This page is a summary maintained by Bield — bag limits, exact dates, and species-specific rules must be verified with NJDFW before each trip.

License requirements

Anglers age 16 and older generally need a valid fishing license to fish in New Jersey. Resident and non-resident licenses are sold online through the NJDFW and at most sporting goods retailers. Annual, multi-day, and lifetime licenses are typically available. Senior, military, and youth discounts apply in most cases. A trout stamp is required to harvest trout. License costs and exact age thresholds change — verify with the NJDFW before purchase.

Freshwater seasons and limits

Trout (rainbow, brown, brook), largemouth and smallmouth bass, walleye, crappie, and pickerel across reservoirs and stocked rivers. The Pine Barrens hold pickerel and bass in tea-colored water. Year-round seasons with trout-specific closures.

River and stream regulations

The South Branch Raritan, Musconetcong, and Big Flat Brook are the trout backbone — Ken Lockwood Gorge on the SBR is a famous catch-and-release section. Smallmouth on the Delaware River. Steelhead and shad runs on the lower Delaware in season.

Saltwater seasons and limits

Striped bass, summer flounder, bluefish, weakfish, scup, and tautog drive the inshore fishery. Offshore for tuna, shark, and mahi-mahi. The Saltwater Recreational Registry Program (SRRP) requires registration in addition to or in place of a license.

Special regulations

Trout stamp required for harvest. Catch-and-release-only sections on the South Branch Raritan (Ken Lockwood Gorge) and other premier streams. Striped bass coastal regulations.
