North Carolina is two distinct fisheries — trout in the Blue Ridge tied tightly to the Davidson, Nantahala, and Toe rivers, and a coastal saltwater fishery along the Outer Banks that ranks among the best on the Atlantic.

Verify with the agency before fishing

Fishing regulations change every season. This page is a summary maintained by Bield — bag limits, exact dates, and species-specific rules must be verified with NCWRC before each trip.

License requirements

Anglers age 16 and older generally need a valid fishing license to fish in North Carolina. Resident and non-resident licenses are sold online through the NCWRC and at most sporting goods retailers. Annual, multi-day, and lifetime licenses are typically available. Senior, military, and youth discounts apply in most cases. A Mountain Heritage Trout Waters Pass or trout license endorsement may be required for designated trout waters. License costs and exact age thresholds change — verify with the NCWRC before purchase.

Freshwater seasons and limits

River and stream regulations

The Davidson, Nantahala, Chattooga, South Toe, and upper Watauga are the marquee trout rivers. Smallmouth on the New River. The Roanoke gets a major striped bass run in spring. Hatchery-supported and Wild Trout designations carry different regulations.

Saltwater seasons and limits
