Tennessee is one of the best trout states in the country thanks to its three premier tailwaters (South Holston, Watauga, Clinch), plus the Smokies for natives and TVA reservoirs for trophy bass.
Fishing regulations change every season. This page is a summary maintained by Bield — bag limits, exact dates, and species-specific rules must be verified with TWRA before each trip.
License requirements
Anglers age 16 and older generally need a valid fishing license to fish in Tennessee. Resident and non-resident licenses are sold online through the TWRA and at most sporting goods retailers. Annual, multi-day, and lifetime licenses are typically available. Senior, military, and youth discounts apply in most cases. A trout permit is required to harvest trout. License costs and exact age thresholds change — verify with the TWRA before purchase.
Freshwater seasons and limits
Largemouth, smallmouth, and spotted bass plus crappie, walleye, and catfish on TVA reservoirs (Pickwick, Wheeler, Watts Bar, Chickamauga, Norris). Lake Chickamauga is a trophy bass destination. Striper fishing is significant on Norris and Cherokee.
River and stream regulations
The South Holston and Watauga tailwaters are world-class wild brown trout fisheries — among the best Sulphur hatch waters in the East. The Clinch is another premier tailwater. The Smokies' streams hold native brook trout and rainbows.
Special regulations
South Holston, Watauga, and Clinch all have trophy regulations on certain stretches. Trout permit required separately. Lake Chickamauga has trophy bass slot limits.
