Brook trout require the coldest water of any stocked salmonid (preferably under 60°F) and rarely survive summer in put-and-take waters. Native-strain restoration stockings target headwater streams where wild populations have been lost. Hatchery brookies stocked alongside rainbows behave similarly in the first week — schooling at stocking points before dispersing.
