Brown trout adapt to wild conditions faster than rainbows and survive longer post-stocking — many stocked browns hold over multiple seasons in suitable habitat. They disperse from stocking points within days and key on cover (undercut banks, woody structure, deep pool corners). Trophy-stocked browns become highly selective within weeks.

First-week stocked browns will eat the same small spinners and PowerBait as rainbows. After they settle into wild behavior, switch to streamers, leech patterns, and nymphs fished tight to structure. Big stocked browns in trophy programs are night-feeding ambush predators — large mouse and streamer patterns at dusk are productive.
