Tide stage fishing guide
The 130-mile New Jersey shore has productive inlets every few miles. Sandy Hook, Manasquan, and Cape May produce the iconic East Coast inlet striped bass fisheries on outgoing tide.

Dominant water types
Inlets have the strongest tidal currents on the inshore side of any coastline. Outgoing tide flushes baitfish from bays to ocean — predators stage on the seaward side to ambush. Incoming tide pushes ocean baitfish into the bay — predators stage on the bayside. Slack tides fish poorly at most inlets except sheepshead and resident species.

—On the rising tide, water pushes baitfish, shrimp, and crabs up into the marsh grass. On the falling tide, that same prey is flushed back through the narrow creek mouths and channels — concentrated by the geometry of the drain. The last two hours of outgoing tide at a creek mouth is the most productive window in inshore fishing because of this flushing effect.

—Open bay water is less directly tide-driven than structure-tied water. Wind setup, water temperature breaks, and bait location often matter more than tide stage. Tide is still relevant for moving baitfish into and out of the open bay system as a whole.

—Tide stage shifts the wave-action zone up and down the beach. Falling tide exposes more wave-active sand bed — sand fleas come active in the wash. Rising tide moves the wash zone higher, reactivating the inshore food chain. Pompano, blues, and surf-feeding predators key on the trough behind the first sandbar at any moving tide.
