Tide stage fishing guide
Block Island Sound and Narragansett Bay sit on the migration highway. Tides are moderate but inlet currents at Watch Hill and Block Island concentrate striped bass and bluefish on the change.
Tidal character
Moderate semidiurnal tides with 3–5 ft typical range. Sound geography mutes Atlantic tide swings. Block Island and Watch Hill are the major fishable structure.

Dominant water types
Inlets have the strongest tidal currents on the inshore side of any coastline. Outgoing tide flushes baitfish from bays to ocean — predators stage on the seaward side to ambush. Incoming tide pushes ocean baitfish into the bay — predators stage on the bayside. Slack tides fish poorly at most inlets except sheepshead and resident species.

—Open bay water is less directly tide-driven than structure-tied water. Wind setup, water temperature breaks, and bait location often matter more than tide stage. Tide is still relevant for moving baitfish into and out of the open bay system as a whole.

—Current creates eddies and shadow lines on the downstream side of every piling. Predators hold in the shadow line ambushing bait swept past by the current. The strongest current — usually mid-incoming or mid-outgoing — produces the most pronounced shadow line and the most concentrated fish.
