Dominant water types
Inlets have the strongest tidal currents on the inshore side of any coastline. Outgoing tide flushes baitfish from bays to ocean — predators stage on the seaward side to ambush. Incoming tide pushes ocean baitfish into the bay — predators stage on the bayside. Slack tides fish poorly at most inlets except sheepshead and resident species.

—Current creates eddies and shadow lines on the downstream side of every piling. Predators hold in the shadow line ambushing bait swept past by the current. The strongest current — usually mid-incoming or mid-outgoing — produces the most pronounced shadow line and the most concentrated fish.

—Passes funnel enormous amounts of water through narrow channels. Outgoing tide at major passes (Boca Grande, Government Cut, Sebastian) creates the most concentrated baitfish flushes in inshore fishing — snook and tarpon stack at pass mouths to ambush.
