About the species

Greater sage grouse are the largest North American grouse species, occupying the sage steppe of the Western US — Wyoming, Montana, Idaho, Nevada, Oregon, Utah, Colorado, and California. Once nearly listed under the Endangered Species Act, populations have stabilized at significantly reduced numbers. Mature males display ornate breeding plumage at lek (mating ground) gatherings.

Sage grouse hunting is restricted with conservative bag limits and short seasons in most range states. Their range and population are tied directly to sagebrush habitat, which has been impacted by fire, conifer encroachment, and energy development.
