About the species
American wigeon (sometimes called "baldpate" for the drake's white forehead patch) are dabbling ducks with a continental range covering most of North America. They breed across Alaska and Canada, wintering from the Gulf Coast to the Pacific Northwest. They feed heavily on aquatic vegetation and are common in coastal estuaries.
Bag limits typically include wigeon within the standard duck aggregate. They're vocal birds — the drake's distinctive whistled "wee-whee" is one of the most recognizable duck calls in the marsh. Decoy work and small-spread calling produce most successful wigeon hunts.
