About the species
Wood ducks are spectacularly plumaged dabblers occupying wooded wetlands across the Eastern and Pacific Northwest US. They nest in tree cavities (and accept nest boxes), making them one of the few ducks that anglers and hunters can directly support through habitat work. Population recovery from near-extinction in the early 1900s is one of conservation's quiet success stories.
Most states allow 3 wood ducks daily within the aggregate duck bag. Wood duck hunting often happens at first light over flooded timber, beaver ponds, and small creek systems. Their tendency to fly tight, fast, and through cover makes them a challenging shot. They're also widely considered one of the best-tasting ducks.
