About the species

Greater white-fronted geese ("specklebellies") are mid-sized geese (5-6 pounds) that breed in the Arctic and winter primarily on the Texas-Louisiana Gulf Coast and the California Sacramento Valley. Their white face mask and barred breast distinguish them from Canadas. Population is healthy and supports moderate hunting.

Most Mississippi and Central Flyway states allow 2-3 specklebellies daily within the goose aggregate. They concentrate in flooded ag fields and prairie wetlands and decoy more readily than Canadas in many situations. Their meat is among the highest-rated of any goose species.
