About the species

Redheads are diving ducks with a continental range covering most of North America, breeding heavily in the prairie pothole region and wintering on the Gulf Coast (especially Texas's Laguna Madre) and the Atlantic. Drakes carry the distinctive red head and gray body. Population has fluctuated over decades but currently supports modest hunting harvest.

Most flyways allow 2 redheads daily within the duck aggregate, occasionally tighter. They feed heavily on submerged aquatic vegetation and concentrate in major coastal bays during winter. They're a prized diving-duck target with above-average table quality compared to most divers.
