Offshore Fishing Tactics

What is a rip current and do fish use it?

A rip current is a strong, narrow current flowing offshore, often through a break in a sandbar. Fish use rip currents because they concentrate bait moving offshore — predators wait at the rip mouth to ambush bait being swept out. Surf fishermen target rip-edge zones for stripers, blues, and pompano.
