Pre-spawn (the 2-3 weeks leading into spawn) produces the year's largest fish as females stage on flats adjacent to spawning coves. Bed fishing during the spawn itself is controversial but legal in most states. Post-spawn typically slows for a week before fish recover and resume feeding. See spawn calendar pages for largemouth timing by region.
Spawn Timing & Fishing
When do largemouth bass spawn?
Largemouth bass spawn when water temperatures hit 60-65°F — typically March in the Deep South, April in the Mid-South and Mid-Atlantic, and May in Northern states. The spawn unfolds in waves over 2-4 weeks as water reaches the trigger temperature in different parts of a lake.
