Do deer see orange and does it matter?

Deer can't see orange the way humans do — they're dichromatic and lack the photoreceptors for red wavelengths. Blaze orange appears as a muted gray-yellow to deer, not the bright color hunters see. Wearing blaze orange during firearm seasons doesn't spook deer based on color alone.

What deer DO see well: ultraviolet, blue, and movement. Bright UV-treated fabric (some laundry detergents add UV brighteners) can glow to deer in low light. Avoid UV brighteners; use specialty camo washes or scent-free detergents.

Movement matters far more than color. State regulations pages cover blaze orange requirements during firearm seasons.
