Q.Cover Crops

How do I terminate a cover crop before planting corn?

A.

Terminate cover crops 2-3 weeks before corn planting using one of: glyphosate herbicide (most common), roller-crimping at flowering (organic option), tillage (least preferred — destroys structure), or mowing followed by tillage. Terminate at least 14 days before planting to avoid nitrogen tie-up from decomposing residue.

Crop calendar pages cover corn planting timing.
