Q.Saltwater Species Behavior

What is a black drum and how does it feed?

A.

Black drum (Pogonias cromis) are large, deep-bodied saltwater fish related to redfish but typically grayish-black in color. They feed on crabs, oysters, shrimp, and shellfish — using powerful crushing teeth in the throat to break shells. Found around oyster bars, jetties, and channel edges, often in depths of 6-30 feet.

Bottom rigs with crab or peeler crab bait produce reliably. Tide guide pages cover productive tide stages.
